Service and Surfing in Costa Rica

Service and Surfing in Costa Rica 1

Hola Amigos!

Since our last check-in, we’ve been very busy with our service projects, surfing and enjoying the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica.

We made our way to a public park where we held a sports camp for the children of La Carpio. Each program member was paired up with one of the local children in order to make each one feel special and ensure their day was memorable. From Marco Polo in the pool to Indian Chief in the fields and picking fresh mango from the trees, every program member made this day one to remember. After saying our goodbyes, we got on the bus to go mini-golfing.

At mini golf, we had a blast going through the Safari themed course. After this, we made our way back to the hotel and we celebrated Maggie’s birthday with Dulce De Leche cake and a dance party!

The following day we made our journey from San Jose all the way to Flamingo. We had fun on the bus playing Name That Tune and singing our favorite songs. Before we knew it, we had arrived at Tamarindo, the largest developed beach town in the province of Guanacaste.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch, grabbed our surfboards and headed to the beach. Lucy, Caroline, and Ellie were catching waves right from the start but were closely followed by the rest of the program members. We had a blast and are already talking about going surfing again when we return home.

Next, we began our service in Flamingo with Siempre Amigos, an organization that assists low-income families in the rural areas of Guanacaste. Specifically, they build houses and we were able to help out by building one for Rafael and his family. On our first day, we made cement to create the entire flooring of the house.

The next day, we finished the floors, sanded and painted the beams, helped install the roof and painted the exterior walls. We are so excited to see the finished product on our last day of service!

We headed to Playa Conchal, the most exotic beach on the Costa Rican Gold Coast. We spent the afternoon in the water and it was so refreshing! We admired the mountains cascading over the Pacific Ocean and later, watched as the sunset turned the sky orange, pink and purple leaving us all in awe of the breathtaking views.

After dinner, we did some Karaoke and Theo had everyone laughing with his charismatic performance of a popular hit song.

Pura Vida!

Until next time,

The Westcoast Blogger
