The Westcoast Connection Advantage: 5 Reasons Parents and Teens Love Our Programs

1. 44 Years of Experience and Commitment to Safety

When choosing a summer program for your teen, safety is one of the most important things to consider. At Westcoast Connection, safety is a top priority, backed by 44 years of experience and an exceptional safety record. Each program is planned 10 to 18 months before summer begins, allowing time to research destinations, carefully review activity providers, and work through the details of each itinerary. Safety protocols are also reviewed annually, with guidance from experts like Cornerstone Safety Group. Each trip is led by a Program Director and supported by a team of more than 20 company directors with an average of 20 years of experience with Westcoast Connection. Staff also complete more than 60 hours of training to prepare for the summer ahead, while Office Monitors check in with every group at least twice daily to provide ongoing support throughout each trip as well as act as a direct link between parents, staff and management.

2. The “Each & Every” Philosophy

At the heart of every Westcoast Connection program is the “Each & Every” philosophy, which balances personalized attention with a strong sense of community. It’s an approach that has guided Westcoast Connection since its very first program, helping teens feel comfortable, supported, and included throughout their summer.

With staff to student ratios ranging from 6:1 to 9:1, leaders have the opportunity to get to know each participant on a personal level. By understanding their unique personalities, preferences, and social or health-related needs staff can provide more individualized support throughout the summer.

Just as important is creating an environment where friendships can develop naturally. Each departure is thoughtfully organized into age-compatible, co-ed groups, so even when a program is open to students across several grades, participants travel with peers closer to their own age. Select programs also offer dedicated departures for middle school students and ON TOUR experiences for older teens completing grades 11 and 12.

Once the trip begins, the Social Integration Plan helps those connections develop naturally. Special attention is given to the first 48-72 hours of the program with welcome activities and icebreakers that help everyone get to know one another. As the summer continues, shared experiences, regular check-ins from summer leaders, and rooming rotations provide participants more opportunities to connect, turning those first introductions into friendships that can last long after the summer ends.

3. Passionate, Highly Trained Program Leaders

Summer leaders can make all the difference in a teen’s experience. At Westcoast Connection, staff are chosen not only for their leadership skills and experience working with teens, but also for their ability to make everyone feel welcome and included. The hiring process includes personal interviews, reference checks, and background checks, with only 18% of applicants selected last year. Before the summer begins, leaders take part in mandatory in-person training, where we review safety procedures, work through real-life scenarios, and prepare for the different situations they may face on the road. Every staff member is also CPR and First Aid certified. During the summer, Program Leaders and Directors have access to 24/7 support from Company Directors, Communication Centers and Regional Supervisors. Senior team members also make more than 200 scheduled visits throughout the summer to check in and make sure programs are running smoothly. From staff training to ongoing support throughout the summer, every step is focused on helping teens have a positive and memorable summer experience.

4. Something for Everyone: Travel, Learn, or Volunteer

With over 70 itineraries designed for students in grades 7 through 12, teens can choose a program style that matches their personal interests and goals:

  • Teen Tours & Global Adventures: Active exploration, scenic road trips, and outdoor adventures across North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
  • Pre-College & Career Experiences: Academic enrichment and career exploration in fields like medicine, business, finance, and psychology. Pre-College programs give teens a taste of university life on campuses like UCLA and McGill, while Career Experiences offer hands-on learning, industry visits, and opportunities to learn from professionals in destinations like New York, London, and Costa Rica.
  • Community Service & Volunteer Opportunities: Meaningful service-learning projects focused on environmental sustainability, wildlife conservation, and community development, where teens gain community service hours.
