Buenas dias family and friends,
Wonderful news from the south: the weather is beautiful, the food is great and the good times are rolling! From La Hacienda Guachipelin we traveled to Flamingo where we kicked off our stay by getting to know the surf breaks at Tamarindo beach with our professional surf lessons. Lloyd, Brooke and Abby got up on their feet on the surfboards and showed us how to “hang-ten!” It was an awesome time and so much fun to live the Pura Vida and chill on the beach all afternoon. Later that night, we got ourselves sharpened up and hit the town for a night out with dancing. Lexi and Val showed off their Latin moves and led us out on the dance floor.
Up in the Flamingo area we began our second service project, a beautification effort at a local primary school and pre-school. Day 1 was at the primary school and we sanded and put a fresh coat of paint on. David was one of the first to get started sanding and painting one of the schools posts and when we couldn’t quite reach some spots, Jack used his height advantage to make some touch ups. It was a fun morning and everyone’s top effort meant that we finished 360’s projects at that particular school for the summer. We celebrated with a trip to the beach and relaxed all afternoon. The ocean water here is so warm and Lola and Anthony will take any opportunity to swim at the beach.
On the second day we were at a pre-school and again, teamwork and hard work paid off for us and the school; plus, working with people from the neighborhood was really rewarding. Sarah and Alison took responsibility for painting the toy shelves on the inside of the classroom while the rest worked on putting up a new coat for the outside. Lexi and Jessica made sure things were going well and provided a little extra TLC in places that needed a touch up and we are thrilled with all the work that we and all the WCC/360 Student Travel trips have done this summer. A pizza party picnic was in order so we grabbed some slices and hit the beach for another afternoon off in the sun and sand. Jumping into waves and body surfing was so much fun and a great way to spend the afternoon. That night we chilled out with a bonfire on the beach and made Costa Rican smores with fruit marshmallows and coconut cookies. A few days of fun, service and yummy food in Flamingo meant that we needed to get on the road again…
Now we are at Lavas Tacotal Hotel outside La Fortuna and in the shadow of the massive Volcano Arenal. It is beautiful up here in the rainforest and everywhere we go there is a symphony of birds, frogs and insects chirping and buzzing around. Stiff as we were from all our hard work, we headed over to the Baldi Hot Springs. It was amazing and Perry, Daniel, Nick and Emma made the most of hitting up as many pools (hot ones to cold ones!) as possible. What an awesome time it has been and as we approach the second half of the trip we look forward to making the most of our time together here in Costa Rica living the Pura Vida.
