Life Changing Experiences

The Excitement Continues in Surfer’s Paradise! – Australia

G’day parents from the tropics of Far North Queensland, Australia!

Since we last left you we’ve had some action-packed days here in Oz!  From Fraser Island we drove south to Surfers Paradise on Australia’s beautiful Gold Coast. After checking into the hotel and dinner, we experienced Infinity, an inter-active funhouse filled with lasers, lights and amusement.  Everyone loved it!!

The next day we headed to Dreamworld, one of the biggest theme parks in Australia. Keira, Allie and many others took on the Tower of Terror II, the fastest ride in the park – clocking in at over 100 miles per hour while others tackled Buzzsaw, the highest inversion ride in the Southern Hemisphere. Coco and Maddie K. also enjoyed the park’s tiger show.

This excitement may sound like enough for one day, but the excitement was just getting started. In the afternoon, we headed to Oz Ball zorbing. Zorbing, developed in New Zealand in the 1990s, involves rolling downhill in a giant orb and we found out it is tons of fun! Jeremy and Beau enjoyed the water version of the ride, while Leo, Haley and Jaime harnessed themselves in and rolled down the hill, laughing all the way down.  On our way back to the hotel we spotted some wild kangaroos and enjoyed seeing the animals hopping around.

After exploring some of the dining hotspots of Surfers, we encountered a street performer and Emma, Amanda and Gillian and many others joined in to sing and dance along with her. Before we knew it, we had developed quite a crowd watching our performance and were the talk of the town! Next, we went bowling where Brent and Patrick particularly impressed us with their skill. However, no matter what the scores were, we all had a great time. The next day brought more adventures as we began our professional surfing instruction on the beach at Coolangatta. Chase, David, Rachel and Sam were “hanging ten” in no time. We also had fun playing Frisbee and footy on the beach with an official “Aussie-rules” football. Dylan, Pat and Ben B. were footy all-stars.

Next up on the agenda was the high ropes course. We harnessed ourselves in and manoeuvred a series of bridges, ladders and ziplines. Taylor, Ryan and Gabi tried the extreme course – high up the trees – and everyone had a great time. We also were able to relax at the hotel and enjoy the pool and hot tub with a beautiful view of the area.

The next day, we had the chance to perfect the surfing skills we learned the day before and after an Italian-themed dinner tried our skills at the arcade. Along with the classic arcade games, Brittany and Molly enjoyed the bumper cars while others played laser tag, mini-putt and the basketball challenge.

The next day, we headed back to where it all began – Brisbane Airport – and boarded our flight to Cairns. After some free time checking out the tropical city, we met “Tall Paul”, the owner of On the Wallaby, and our guide for the next few days and set out on a drive to the charming small town of Yungaburra and the On the Wallaby lodge. So far during our say, we’ve seen the famous cathedral fig tree, spotted tree kangaroos and possums on a night canoe underneath the stars, swam in pristine waterfalls, visited a local chocolate factory and witnessed the beautiful sites of the Wet Tropics World Heritage site. Jason, Lexi and Joli, among many others, all swam behind the Millla-Milla waterfalls, an experience of a lifetime and certainly a highlight of the trip. We’re looking forward to more excitement here at the Lodge tomorrow and at our stay in nearby Cairns, where we get to visit one of the seven natural wonders of the world – The Great Barrier Reef!

Until next time, so long from Australia!
