Hello avid followers….
We have arrived in Los Angeles! The weather is unbelievably beautiful, as it is known to have 325 days of sunshine a year! The journey from San Diego to LA was interrupted by a memorable lunch on the San Clemente Pier. The group of students walked around on the boardwalk and took in the beautiful ocean and hilly scenery around them. On the first night in LA, the group went glow-in-the-dark mini golfing. Hannah impressed her teammates with her great golf skills by finishing the game with the highest score. What a memorable night in LA!
On Day 11, we began its first day of community service at the Orange County Rescue Mission, a rehabilitation program for the homeless. The group set up a sundae bar after dinner in order to treat the residents. Candace, David, Max, Stefanie, and Meredith showed great leadership by helping serve the ice cream to the residents. Trip members Emma and Lexie helped some of the children wanting ice cream choose the best toppings for their sundae creations! Nothing but smiles were seen. Jordan mentioned that she was really touched by the appreciation the residents showed to the group. After supper, we were responsible to animate activities for pre-school children as well as school aged children. Trip leader Jessica and trip members Aaron, Max, Micaela, David, Eve, and Lauren did an amazing job playing with the pre-school aged children in the playground. Their imaginations went wild as they became princesses, knights, and superheroes to engage with the children. Meredith and Danielle helped Trip Director Jasmine come up with fun activities to do with the school aged children during service. Great leadership, ladies! They, along with trip members Candace, Marti, Jordan, Hannah, and Arley showed the children how to make tissue paper flowers and popsicle stick boxes. They were very proud of their crafts. What a great first day at the Orange County Rescue Mission!
We then headed to Venice Beach! The group enjoyed the boardwalk with funky shops and eateries. It was a great people watching area because there are many colorful and interesting individuals there. At the end of the day, the group went to Diddy Reese, a famous ice cream parlor that offers ice cream sandwiches between home-made cookies. Jenn mentioned that she has never eaten a yummier desert! Yes, it was that good!
The group headed back to the Orange County Rescue Mission, where the students embarked on their final day of community service with the organization. The residence needed assistance fixing the sandbox in the children’s playground area. Trip member Jamie was touched by the fact that a couple of children approached her to thank the group for giving them an additional area to play outdoors. The group left the organization with great memories and a sense of accomplishment! Now, the group is off to the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica, where many children are waiting to greet us!
