Crime Scene Investigation: CSI Montreal

Experience the multidisciplinary world of forensic science through hands-on training exercises and theoretical lessons. CSI procedures will be examined along with more advanced topics of forensic anthropology, biology and bloodstain pattern analysis. A major case scenario will be staged and you will work in investigative teams to identify, collect and interpret the evidence before acting as a forensic expert witness and testifying in a mock court setting.

Play the tunes you love from a Bluetooth speaker you design from scratch! Learn the process of prototyping and iterative design. Community Service

Los Angeles (Full-Day Track): Perform meaningful service in the communities in and around LA. Projects are finalized in the spring; those currently planned are several days working with the children at the Boys & Girls Club and a few days helping to maintain and beautify gardens in local schools with Enrich LA. You make a difference in the lives of those we serve. A letter recognizing your hours of service is issued. We are a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Los Angeles (Afternoon Option): Perform meaningful service in the communities in and around LA. Projects are finalized in the spring and you may work with the children at a Youth Group and organize donations at the LA Food Bank. A letter recognizing your hours of service is issued after the summer. Westcoast Connection is a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Montreal: You can make a real difference to local communities in Montreal. Projects may include working with youth and families, sorting through donations for families in need, as well as serving meals to the homeless. A letter of completion recognizing your hours of service and detailing the projects accomplished will be issued after the summer. Westcoast Connection is a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Barcelona (Morning Option): Give back to Barcelona's most impoverished this summer with the Sant'Egidio Community, an international mission with chapters around the world. You'll have the opportunity to take part in various welfare improvement projects, such as preparing meals for soup kitchens, distributing goods from food banks, and assisting with restoration and beautification initiatives. A letter for your hours of community service will be provided.

Barcelona (Afternoon Option): For more than fifty years, Barcelona’s Martí-Codolar Youth Center has provided disadvantaged children, young people and families a place to participate in educational and recreational programs after school and during the summer. You can make a real difference as you facilitate programs, games, computer education and English classes for these children. A letter recognizing your hours of service is issued after the summer. Westcoast Connection is a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Montreal Culture - Behind the Scenes: Enjoy this “field trip” around Montreal to learn about the French-Canadian culture that makes this city so unique. Explore the “Place des Festivals”, historic Old Montreal with its 17th century cobblestone streets, and the city’s Mount Royal Park designed by the same designer as New York’s Central Park. Discover multiple museums, artistic venues, and indulge in their famous poutine or smoked meat.

Develop your understanding of the cultural revolution of the Renaissance. Through on-site visits, you become familiar with the Romanesque and Gothic styles in which the first Renaissance painters, sculptors and architects had their roots and from which they were to dramatically diverge. Fashion Design

This course introduces you to the world of fashion design. It shows you the process and strategies of making a new collection. It includes trend research, color story, fabric selection, draping design concepts and innovation. You create a collection of your own with illustrations, drawings and collages. Modern artists studied are known for a spirit of political revolt and artistic experimentation and include van Gogh, Picasso, Dalí and Warhol. Students visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art and a number of modern galleries.

Photography

Digital Photography: This in-the-field course is for all levels, all you need is an interest in photography. Learn about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera modes and the basics of composition (lighting, exposure, framing, focus, and blur) through workshops and assignments in different areas of the city. Creativity mixes with practical skills and culminates in an individual photography project completed by the end of the course.

Through on-site visits, you become familiar with the Romanesque and Gothic styles in which the first Renaissance painters, sculptors and architects had their roots and from which they were to dramatically diverge. Introduction Filmmaking with The New York Film Academy

NYFA instructors with tremendous experience and training from the nation’s elite film schools teach you to write, direct, shoot and edit. Intensive study of camera operation, screenwriting and directing prepare you for the production day, where you enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shoot a movie on the Universal Studios backlot. The course concludes with editing and post-production work.

Fashion Design

This course introduces you to the world of fashion design. It shows you the process and strategies of making a new collection. It includes trend research, color story, fabric selection, draping design concepts and innovation. You create a collection of your own with illustrations, drawings and collages. This introduction class does not include sewing or actual garment creation.

Introduction to Modern Art

Modern artists studied are known for a spirit of political revolt and artistic experimentation and include van Gogh, Picasso, Dalí and Warhol. Students visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art and a number of modern galleries.

French Language: Beginner to Advanced

Spanish Language

This course is taught at International House Spanish Language School, a center of learning for over 40 years and one of Spain’s leading teacher training centers. While attention is given to grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing, the main emphasis and goal is enhancing your verbal skills.  We don’t just want you to know Spanish, we want you to be able to use it. This course is designed for non-native English-speaking students interested in attending an English-speaking college or university and to help prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Careers in Fashion with the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising FIDM

Weeks 1 & 2 - Select one of the following three options:

Option #1: Fashion Business Track - Take an entrepreneurial approach to the fashion industry. Learn the elements of launching your own business, from how to differentiate and market a product, to understanding the changing retail marketplace.

Option #2: Fashion Track - This Track is project driven with a focus on trends, technology, and sustainable practices. Take an idea from concept to consumer, from trend research and developing a theme and color palette, to getting an apparel line made and presenting it. 

Option #3: Visual Art & Design Track - Explore visual space and employ a variety of high tech and hands-on design media. Workshops include photography, photo editing, styling, logo development, screen-printing and packaging. Students develop a visual identity by creating a visual story, logos, and branding concepts.

Week 3 - All Westcoast Connection students come together: 

The Future of Fashion – Sustainable Innovation - It is no longer a trend to consider as it's imperative that we learn about sustainable options. This will be a hands-on, interactive learning environment focusing on a sustainability theme that exposes students to innovative thinking within product design and development.

Community Service

Los Angeles (Full-Day Track): Perform meaningful service in the communities in and around LA. Projects are finalized in the spring; those currently planned are several days working with the children at the Boys & Girls Club and a few days helping to maintain and beautify gardens in local schools with Enrich LA. You make a difference in the lives of those we serve. A letter recognizing your hours of service is issued. We are a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Los Angeles (Afternoon Option): Perform meaningful service in the communities in and around LA. Projects are finalized in the spring and you may work with the children at a Youth Group and organize donations at the LA Food Bank. A letter recognizing your hours of service is issued after the summer. Westcoast Connection is a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Montreal: You can make a real difference to local communities in Montreal. Projects may include working with youth and families, sorting through donations for families in need, as well as serving meals to the homeless. A letter of completion recognizing your hours of service and detailing the projects accomplished will be issued after the summer. Westcoast Connection is a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Barcelona (Morning Option): Give back to Barcelona's most impoverished this summer with the Sant'Egidio Community, an international mission with chapters around the world. You'll have the opportunity to take part in various welfare improvement projects, such as preparing meals for soup kitchens, distributing goods from food banks, and assisting with restoration and beautification initiatives. A letter for your hours of community service will be provided.

Barcelona (Afternoon Option): For more than fifty years, Barcelona’s Martí-Codolar Youth Center has provided disadvantaged children, young people and families a place to participate in educational and recreational programs after school and during the summer. You can make a real difference as you facilitate programs, games, computer education and English classes for these children. A letter recognizing your hours of service is issued after the summer. Westcoast Connection is a Certifying Organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Cooking

Cooking with Sur la TableFrom learning basic knife skills to creating succulent dishes, if you are a foodie, this course is for you! Whether you’re creating gourmet entrées or delicious desserts, this course will make you salivate. Our expert chef will help you develop technical skills in the kitchen in this hands-on culinary experience, where each class focuses on a different theme. You even get to take away a book full of recipes you helped prepare!

Cooking: The Food & Culture of Spain: Expert chefs at the Barcelona Cooking School teach you kitchen skills and develop your understanding of Spanish culture, as shaped by culinary traditions. In each class, learn about a different region and how to prepare signature dishes, such as Valencian paella and tapas from Catalonia. The contemporary kitchen is located on Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas, steps from Boqueria Market, one of the most famous food markets in the world.

Italian Cooking: For students with an interest in Italian cooking, classes are interactive and hands-on, and focus on the different aspects of regional food in Italy and the preparation of dishes that distinguish traditional Italian cuisine. During practical cooking lessons, you are introduced to cooking methods, techniques and preparations utilized in Italian cuisine and learn how to use different ingredients to prepare Italian dishes.

Photography

Digital Photography: This in-the-field course is for all levels, all you need is an interest in photography. Learn about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera modes and the basics of composition (lighting, exposure, framing, focus, and blur) through workshops and assignments in different areas of the city. Creativity mixes with practical skills and culminates in an individual photography project completed by the end of the course.

Digital Photography Journal:  Use the digital photographic method as a tool to create a visual diary as a record of your interaction with society and the self. Emphasis is on Florence and cultural understanding. The goal is to develop meaningful journals that function at both public and private levels. Visits and walks around Florence and its sites are an integral part of this course.

Montreal Culture - Behind the Scenes: Enjoy this “field trip” around Montreal to learn about the French-Canadian culture that makes this city so unique.
