Summer Medicine Program for High School Students

Become the doctor in the room. Developed in collaboration with Meducators, this immersive clinical medicine experience in London gives ambitious high school students a rare opportunity to think and act like real doctors. Students will build a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology, learn how clinicians interpret symptoms and examinations, explore medical ethics, and see how medical teams move from first patient presentation to a working diagnosis and safe management plan.

Through interactive workshops and simulations guided by board-certified UK doctors and medical educators, students will be immersed into the clinical environment – from initial patient assessment to emergency scenarios. Learn to assess a lifelike simulated patient, form a differential diagnosis, and present a plan of care just like a hospital team. Beyond the classroom, we’ll visit major medical institutions together and explore London’s iconic neighborhoods and landmarks, experiencing one of the world’s great cities through the lens of a future healthcare professional.

Medical Curriculum

Facilitated by instructors with expertise across the UK National Health Service, this immersive program introduces students to the core principles and real-world skills at the heart of modern medicine.

Students will explore how doctors assess patients, form differential diagnoses, and make safe management decisions through interactive teaching, practical skills workshops, real clinical case studies and team-based challenges. You will build a strong foundation in diagnostic reasoning, emergency care, clinical communication and ethical decision-making while collaborating closely with your peers.

Emergency Medicine & Acute Care

Understanding emergency scenarios including airway compromise, trauma, and sepsis.

Vital Signs, Tests & Clinical Pathways

Developing diagnostic reasoning using vital signs, monitoring tools, and bedside assessments.
Interpreting imaging and tests
Learning how clinical pathways and guidelines support safe, consistent patient care.

Students will be grouped into small “clinical teams” and mentored by Meducators instructors to work through a realistic simulated patient case using a high-fidelity simulated patient in a hospital bed. This lifelike simulator can breathe, cough, speak, and display changing vital signs, creating an authentic environment where students feel the pressure and responsibility of real clinical decision-making.

Each team will:

Take a structured history and interpret key examination findings from a simulated scenario.
Form a differential diagnosis and assess how sick the patient is.
Decide on appropriate investigations and outline a safe management plan.
Present their clinical reasoning and plan of care, just as a hospital team would on ward rounds.

This capstone challenge brings together the program’s core themes of patient assessment, diagnostic reasoning, emergency thinking, communication, and teamwork, and gives students the chance to experience what it feels like to “be the doctor in the room.”

Students will gain an inside look into the diverse and rewarding career landscape within medicine and the wider healthcare sector.

Topics include:

Key career pathways across hospital medicine, surgery, general practice, emergency medicine, pediatrics, mental health, and allied health professions.
The skills, training routes and qualifications required to pursue medical careers in North America, the UK and internationally.
How to combine academic study with meaningful clinical exposure, work experience and healthcare volunteering.

Staying at the University of London’s College Hall offers an enriching on-campus experience. Its central location offers proximity to key attractions along with comfortable accommodations. Flight to London
Some students may need to depart their home city on July 18 to arrive in London on July 19. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by our staff and enjoy a complimentary transfer (for flights in designated times) from the airport to our hotel. For those requiring, we are happy to assist you with arranging flights to and from the program. If you prefer, you may be dropped off directly at our hotel and meet your staff there. For our North American students, we offer a chaperoned group flight from New York to London departing on July 18.

Return Flight Home from London
For your return from London, our leaders help you to check-in and remain in the airport until flights in designated times have departed. For our North American students, we offer a chaperoned flight to New York. You may choose to join that flight and arrange transfers (if required) at suitable times after the group has cleared customs and immigration in the USA to your home city.

Meals
Breakfasts in London are eaten at our hotels and served buffet style with a variety of options. For dinners, either the whole group goes to the same restaurant or we divide into smaller groups of your choosing. For lunch, you will enjoy eating in smaller groups and choosing from local cafés, bistros, and other restaurants. The food in London is terrific, so get set to eat extremely well!

We have satisfied the choosiest of eaters and gladly accommodate most special dietary requests including vegetarian, food allergies, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, and kosher style. We welcome discussing your individual requirements with you and have extensive experience in this area.

Laundry
You will only need to bring one week’s worth of clothing as outlined in the packing list that will be sent to you prior to departure.

Included in your program tuition is all lodging, breakfast and dinner daily, recreation & entertainment listed, airport transfers in designated times, gratuities & taxes.

Not included is transportation to and from the program, lunches, snacks, personal spending money for souvenirs, laundry and the application fee. We also make available optional travel insurance that is not included, but highly recommended.

Who are the staff and what are their qualifications?
Our staff are educators, guidance counselors, coaches, college and university students, former camp counselors, residence life coordinators, community volunteers, world travelers, and other leaders with diverse backgrounds. Many are former participants themselves who couldn’t get enough of the Westcoast experience! Learn more about our summer leaders.
What if I need to contact my teen during the program?
Participants may bring their cell phones so parents may call and message their kids directly. You may also contact our Communication Centers which serve as the official link between programs on the road and parents. We are staffed every day during the summer and have somebody on call for after hours emergencies ready to assist you 24/7.
Will attending one of your programs help me get into college?
Attending a summer program is an incredible opportunity to learn and grow into a more well-rounded, mature individual. No matter what type of program you choose, the personal development and experience gained over the course of the summer are valuable resources that could help you with your college essays and applications. If your goal for the summer is to get a head start on college prep, a Career Experience or Pre-College Enrichment program could be just what you need. So while attending any particular summer program will not necessarily get you into your choice school, what you get from it can make a difference!
