Idyllic Alpine Beauty

This small nation is very comfortable in its lush, emerald-green shoes. A place made for exploring outdoors, Slovenia is a natural playground that invites you to enjoy the fresh air and feel the thrill of adventure. The towering peaks of the idyllic Julian Alps. A glacier-fed lake that inspired myths and legends. Beautiful streams and waterfalls. And then there’s the island castle of majestic Lake Bled. But there’s also diverse architecture. Ljubljana Castle, perched on a hilltop in the center of the capital city, dates back to the mid-15th century, built as walls and barracks to provide protection against Turkish invasions and peasant uprisings. A relatively “new” nation—Slovenia has only been independent since 1991—Slovenia lacks the deep roots of other larger European nations, but still has its own unique history. Present-day Slovenia was first settled by early humans more than 250,000 years ago and was at times inhabited by Illyrian and Celtic tribes, Ancient Romans, Slavic tribes, Carantanians and Bavarians, eventually becoming part of Yugoslavia. This small country seized its independence without royalty or military leaders.
