Visit several sanctuaries to support conservation and rehabilitation efforts for Thailand's national animal: the Asian Elephant. You’ll gain insight into the challenges these gentle giants face due to deforestation and habitat loss, see firsthand how local Mahouts (Thai elephant caretakers) are working tirelessly to rehabilitate and protect them, and use the Five Freedoms method to learn what makes a truly responsible animal sanctuary.
At the sanctuary, we take part in meaningful activities that directly contribute to the elephants' well-being, like preparing their food, helping plant crops for future meals, and engaging in elephant enrichment activities.
*Westcoast Connection does not support or include elephant riding, in order to prioritize the welfare of elephants.
Float down the scenic River Kwae and soak in all the jungle vibes while learning about the plants, animals, and the natural systems that keep everything alive. Then head to a local eco-village, where you’ll meet the people who live in the middle of the reserve and see how they use various sustainable practices to take care of the planet.
Roll up your sleeves and jump into a unique eco-building project using mud bricks to construct a house within the reserve. With hands-on guidance, you’ll learn traditional techniques like laying bricks and applying mud plaster to strengthen the walls. This experience provides a practical understanding of how natural materials can be used.
Participants will help improve a local playground by repainting equipment, replacing ropes, and restoring the chicken coops at a school that receives minimal government funding. Afterwards, you’ll spend time playing games and learning alongside the children, gaining a firsthand glimpse into their daily lives.
Embrace island life with an introduction to marine conservation, learning how local ecosystems function and about the efforts underway to protect marine life around Koh Yao Noi. You’ll help collect debris caught in the mangroves during high-tide, then kayak through winding channels to see firsthand how the forest supports local wildlife and coastal communities. You’ll also visit the Yami Village to connect with the local culture and gain insight into how this unique community lives.
Additionally, you’ll be sorting trash and observing the full recycling process for plastic bottles as part of a local International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) project. Finally, learn about the Hornbill Conservation Project and help build nests, directly contributing to the preservation of these birds on nearby islands.

How are roommates assigned?
Giving everyone a chance to make new friends creates a cohesive group and the warmest and most welcoming social environments in our industry!
To promote this, many of our programs have a rooming rotation as follows:
We assign the rooms for the first and second stops. For the first stop, independent travelers room with other independent travelers and any friends who enrolled can room together. All participants will be assigned a different roommate for the second stop. After the first two stops, participants can choose their roommates.
On our Pre-College Enrichment programs & Career Experiences, as well as select programs with extended stays, rooming is as follows:
We assign independent travelers with another independent traveler for the duration of your stay. Any friends who enrolled together can room together. If applicable, after the first two nights, participants can choose their roommates.
