Our Service Impact

Over 20 years of empowering teen leadership and global awareness through community service.

Real Service. Real Growth. Real Impact.

Westcoast Connection has been empowering teens through service since our first volunteer program launched in 2005. By engaging in immersive, hands-on service, participants develop confidence and global awareness while making meaningful, lasting contributions to communities around the world.

To ensure these efforts are relevant and measurable, we focus on our most recent five-year stats to show the tangible impact our volunteers have achieved.

The WCC Impact Snapshot

  • 20-Year Service Legacy: Empowering teen leadership and global awareness since our first service program launched in Washington State in 2005.
  • 70,241 Hours of Service: Massive collective impact in the last 5 years alone.
  • 1,798 Active Participants: Teenagers who moved beyond the classroom to lead, build, and conserve in real-world environments.
  • Economic Value: Our service hours represent the equivalent of 120 full-time employees working for an entire year.
  • 1:6 or 1:7 Mentorship Ratio: 272 staff members facilitating reflection and leadership growth.
  • 30+ NGO Partners: Collaborative projects with partners, including some Candid Platinum, Certified B Corp and 4-Star Charity Navigator rated organizations.

Why It Matters

  • For the Community: Participants build permanent infrastructure (homes, schools, community centers) and provide scientific data through citizen science projects for reef and wildlife conservation that organizations use year-round.
  • For the Teen: By stepping out of their comfort zones and into new cultures, participants develop a sense of empathy and a broader perspective of the world. Through this hands-on service, they gain the confidence, independence, and self-awareness that helps them become well-rounded leaders.
  • A Legacy of Trust: With 20 years of experience, we have vetted every partner and project, prioritizing student safety and community needs through longstanding local partnerships.

The Pillars of Meaningful Impact

Our volunteer programs are developed with established partners who assign meaningful tasks that address genuine community needs.

  • Service-Learning Framework: We use guided reflection to build empathy, teamwork, and leadership, while partnering with local organizations.
  • Tangible Outcomes: Our projects produce real results, such as classroom improvements, community facilities, homes, and gardens.
  • Lifelong Ethic: We inspire teens to continue service and leadership long after the summer ends.
  • Skill Development: We focus on confidence, independence, and an understanding of global issues.

The Three-Fold Impact

We believe that impact is a three-way street. Our programs are designed for shared success, so that every project delivers measurable benefits to our participants, our host communities, and our partners simultaneously.

1. Impact on Teens: Leadership, Mentorship & Career Discovery

  • Leadership: Our staff members don’t just supervise; they mentor. They are the bridge between a day of hard work and a lifetime of perspective.
  • Career Discovery: Through initiatives like REEF’s Marine Conservation Career Panel and shadowing licensed physicians with MEDLIFE, students gain a “first-look” at professional paths in medicine, marine biology, and NGO management.
  • Personal Resilience: Teens gain independence and pride through hands-on work and time away from home, building a “can-do” mindset that translates to academic success.
  • Global Empathy: Direct interaction with community leaders and local families fosters a deep, lasting understanding of global social challenges.

2. Impact on Local Communities: Projects That Matter

Meaningful service is about leaving behind results that last long after our groups return home. From critical infrastructure to environmental restoration, our projects address real-world needs identified by the communities themselves.

  • Enduring Infrastructure: Constructing concrete pathways, home foundations, and school facilities creates safe, long-lasting spaces that strengthen community resilience for future generations.
  • Youth Leadership: Through language exchanges and youth day camps, our participants provide social and educational support to local children, fostering global perspectives for both the volunteers and the community youth.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Planting native mangroves and trees safeguards long-term coastal protection and restores natural habitats for endangered species like the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle.
  • Strengthening Local Economies: We support community-based tourism by partnering with local providers for transportation, meals, and logistics. Simultaneously, our volunteers provide an essential labor-savings benefit; by contributing thousands of service hours, we allow NGOs and schools to redirect their limited budgets toward specialized needs like medicine, textbooks, and conservation initiatives.
  • Health & Wellness Access: Collaborative projects with partners like MEDLIFE provide essential support for mobile clinics, helping underserved populations gain access to primary healthcare and improved sanitary conditions.

3. Impact on Partners: Trusted Collaboration

In the past five years, we’ve partnered with 30+ service providers, prioritizing collaboration with local experts in every region. This local-first approach ensures time and resources are focused on the highest-impact initiatives.

Partnership Spotlight: Costa Rica Regional Snapshot

While WCC has been on the ground in Costa Rica since 2006, the last five years have seen a massive surge in impact: ~12,000 regional service hours by 600+ students.

  1. Siempre Amigos (13-Year Partner): Constructing permanent facilities like community centers, recreational areas and homes.
  2. LAST (Sea Turtle Conservation): We work closely with marine biologists and conservationists to support hatchery monitoring and night patrols. Sea turtle conservation has also created a powerful ripple effect beyond protecting the turtles, generating sustainable jobs and opportunities within local tourism.
  3. MEDLIFE: Supporting mobile clinics alongside licensed physicians and renovating community kitchens.

“Sofia was able to gain a new perspective on how she interacts in the world and a sense of empowerment and confidence from working in the community.” Claudia B., Los Angeles, CA

Partnership Spotlight: Florida Keys Marine Conservation

The Grassroots Guardian: Conch Republic Marine Army (CRMA)

Born from the wreckage of Hurricane Irma, CRMA is the definition of “neighbors helping neighbors.”

  • The Impact: In 2025, our participants removed 407 lbs of marine debris and recovered 176 feet of abandoned trapline, preventing wildlife entanglement.

The Reef Architects: Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF)

The world’s leading reef restoration organization involves students in the holistic recovery of an ecosystem.

  • The Impact: Participants practice the delicate art of coral outplanting—attaching “baby” corals to the reef to restore vital cover.

“The students and staff have been incredible—so engaged, positive, and flexible throughout!”REEF Team

Beyond the Summer: College Readiness & Career Discovery

For many participants, a Westcoast Connection service program is the bridge between high school interests and future professional goals. We provide teens with a competitive edge in their academic and career journeys.

The Competitive Advantage for College Applications

Admissions officers look for more than just a list of activities; they look for depth, commitment, and global perspective.

  • Narrative Building: Our programs provide students with the unique, hands-on stories that form the basis of standout college application essays and personal statements.
  • Documented Impact: Every student receives an official certificate verifying their hours and describing the specific service projects and partners.
  • Demonstrated Leadership: By collaborating on large-scale infrastructure and conservation projects, students show evidence of teamwork, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication—traits highly valued by top-tier universities.

Career Paths & Professional Discovery

We provide a “first-look” at high-stakes professional environments, allowing teens to explore potential careers before declaring a major.

  • Public Health & Medicine: With a partner like MEDLIFE, students shadow licensed physicians and assist in mobile clinics, gaining rare exposure to the challenges and rewards of the healthcare field.
  • Sustainable Development & Engineering: Projects with partners like Siempre Amigos allow students interested in architecture, engineering, or international relations to see how ethical infrastructure projects are planned and executed.
  • Marine Biology & Conservation: Through partnerships with REEF and the Coral Restoration Foundation, students attend a professional career panel and work alongside field biologists, learning the realities of environmental science.

“I learned a lot about myself and grew from stepping out of my comfort zone. The community service was meaningful…” — Ryan L., Franklin Lakes, NJ

A Legacy of Service

While our service roots go back twenty years, we remain focused on the future. The progress we’ve seen since 2005—moving from a single project in Washington State to the lasting infrastructure, restored ecosystems, and vital support for underserved communities we provide today—shows that when teens are given the right tools, they do more than just volunteer; they lead. We look forward to continuing this work, helping students gain a broader perspective and the skills to become active global citizens.
