Hurricane Harvey was one of the costliest hurricanes to hit the United States. At its height, Harvey displaced more than 30,000 people in the Houston area. Rebuilding efforts have been ongoing but more recently, in September 2019, Tropical Storm Imelda once again brought about disastrous flooding. There is still much work to do. This Houston summer community service program for teens is an opportunity to help Houston homeowners, who to this day still have no permanent home. Students will be working under the direction of Westcoast Connection, SBP and their AmeriCorps members on an active build site to directly help with the rebuilding efforts. When not restoring homes, participants on this Houston volunteer trip get to explore the city with activities like a Houston Astros baseball game, visiting the Houston Space Center and a day trip to Galveston Beach. All in all, this teen summer program offers an incredible experience: a meaningful project, a sense of community, hands-on homebuilding skills, teamwork, and fun.
